Brief Introduction Founded early in 1957, the Shanghai Chest Hospital (SCH) is one of the oldest, top-rank medical centers in China specialized in thoracic and cardiovascular diseases. It was designated by the Ministry of Public Health as the National Training Base for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and became a teaching hospital of Shanghai Second Medical University in 1988. Since its establishment, the SCH has gained a series or ornaments, such as ‘Ten Best Occupational Ethics Unit of Shanghai’ and ‘Model Unit of Shanghai’, issued by the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Public Health Bureau.
The renowned medical center has 494 beds in 16 wards, including ICU and a priority service ward. The SCH offers sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in specialties of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, cardiology, pulmonology, radiotherapy, combined traditional Chinese and Western medicine, emergency care, anesthesiology, intensive care unit, radiology, pathology, endoscopy, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine etc. It also hosts the Shanghai Institute of Thoracic Oncology and a cardiovascular research lab. Among its 900 employees, there are more than 50 professors and associate professors, 100 senior physicians, and 10 tutors of mastery or doctorate degrees, with 27 of them holding honored pensions from the State Council. In addition, the SCH is well equipped with advanced medical apparatus like DSA, spiral CT, ECT, linear accelerator, 3D–crt treatment planning system, ultrasonography, automatic bioanalysis system, and intensive care facilities.
The SCH handles more than 10,000 inpatients and outpatient visits from nation wide annually. The surgical staff has performed more than 60,000 thoracic and cardiovascular operations in the past 40 years, focusing on CABG, heart valve replacement, correction of CHD, and the surgical management of tracheal, pulmonary, esophageal, and mediastinal disorders. Among the hospital milestones were the first heart-lung machine in China, the first successful sternum transplantation in China , the first successful lung transplantation in Shanghai , and their pioneering tracheal resection and reconstruction in China . The SCH cardiologists are well esteemed in the intervention therapy for cardiovascular diseases and the management of refractory heart failure, olstinate arrhythmias, and acute myocardial infarction. The SCH takes leading positions in the early detection and multidisciplinary management of lung cancer internationally, as well as in the endoscopic therapy, cytological and histological diagnosis domestically. At present, the SCH uptakes two Leading Medical Programs in Shanghai , namely the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Program and the Pulmonary Oncology Program. In 2002, it was named the Shanghai Clinical Center of Pulmonary Oncology. Numerous research protocols issued by the Ministry of Public Health, the Municipal government, and the city Public Health Bureau are now being conducted at the SCH.
